Check the Lens Before the View

Scripture (NIV)

Gospel of Matthew 7:3–5

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? … First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Reflection

There are moments when it’s easier to see what’s “off” in someone else than to sit with what God may be revealing in us. Not because we’re malicious…

But because self-reflection requires stillness. Honesty. Surrender. Jesus isn’t silencing our voice—He’s refining our lens. He invites us to pause before we point, to heal before we highlight, and to examine before we engage.

Because when our vision is clear, our correction becomes compassionate… not critical. And when our hearts are aligned, we don’t just speak truth—we carry it well.

Reflection Questions

  • Where might I be focusing on someone else’s “speck” instead of addressing my own “plank”?

  • What is God gently inviting me to acknowledge, release, or realign within myself?

Prayer

God,

Search me with love and truth. Help me to see myself clearly—not with shame, but with grace. Refine my heart so that my words reflect You.

Teach me to lead with humility, to respond with wisdom, and to carry truth in a way that heals, not harms. Clear my lens, Lord…so I can see others the way You see me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
